Safe
Teen Weight Loss
We all want to look our best, and there’s no harm in that,
but for the younger ones among us, attaining the body of our
dreams carries with it a host of dangers. While the growing
obesity epidemic poses serious health risks, care must be taken
by teenagers to not move too far in the opposite direction.
Excessive teen weight loss can bring with it a
host of other health problems, as well as behavioral and
psychological disorders. In this article, I hope to help you
determine if your teen’s weight loss is within healthy
boundaries as well as offer tips and suggestions for safe ways
to cut weight.
One of the biggest obstacles in the path to healthy
teen weight loss is,
surprisingly, the actions of parents – without a healthy
support system at home, teens struggle more with body issues
and over or under-eat. If a teenager is truly gong to be
able to manage his calorie intake, he needs to be given role
models in the form of his parents. Even though a teenager
may act independent, their home environment has a great
impact on how they grow and develop. If your teen is
struggling with food issues, the first change needs to
happen at the dinner table. Take the opportunity to evaluate
the eating habits of the entire family, and try to start
conversations about their health in a natural way. If they
see that healthy eating and exercise is important to you,
it’s more likely to be important to them.
On the other side of that discussion, it’s important to
insulate your child from the pernicious cultural influence of
fad diets and "easy” weight loss programs. Teen weight loss is
in many ways easier to accomplish than adults due to their
faster metabolisms, so fad diets are not really necessary. A
well-balanced, regular meal schedule with healthy snacks and
the proper amount of fruits, vegetables, and proteins will give
them everything they need.
There are many ways that you can make exercising with your
teen a regular part of your routine that will maximize
weight loss
and minimize embarrassment. The recent success of Nintendo’s
Wii game console has encouraged physical activity among the
joystick set, and most of the available games have
cooperative or competitive play. Organizing activities like
bicycle trips, hikes, and beach outings will also lead to a
more physically balanced lifestyle. Eating less and exercise
are the keys to not only teen weight loss but adult weight
loss as well, so you may even see some benefits in your own
shape.
